Tyre Glossary of Terms

Air Pressure

Amount of air in the tyre, measured in pounds per square inch (PSI).

Alignment

Refers to the direction of the wheels and aligned with suspension and steering.

Balancing

A process to ensure the tyre and wheel weight is equally distributed.

Bead

The part of the tyre that helps hold the tyre to the rim

Casing

The section of the tyre under the tread and sidewalls

Winter tyres

The provide better grip in more extreme conditions

Load

A code to indicate the maximum weight that a tyre can take at certain speeds

Rim

Metal edge which the bead is seated on providing support to the tyre

Rolling Resistance

The energy needed to keep a tyre rolling at a constant speed

Run Flats

Specially designed tyres allowing you to briefly run on flat tyres at a low speed

Sidewall

Area from the bead to the start of the tread

Tyre

Mixture of rubber, chemicals, and metals which provide grip and traction

Tread

The outer surface area of the tyre which comes into contact with the road surface
