Tyre Safety MonthAfter the success of last year’s campaign, TyreSafe will focus on highlighting how easy it is to check the tyre tread depth for families. This can be done with relative ease and little expense, in fact just 20p is all that is needed.

TyreSafe are looking to provide materials to the trade which include posters, leaflets, website banners, and DVD’s explaining the test.

“Last year we introduced the 20p test which gives drivers a really quick and simple way to check if their tyre tread is safe and legal,” explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “We received fantastic feedback from the campaign so this year we have developed it further to specifically target families where many still do not realise just how simple and important tread depth checks are.”

The 20p tyre tread test

  • Insert a 20p coin into the main tread grooves of a tyre
  • If the outer rim of the coin is visible the tyre may not be meeting the requirements for tread depth

Please note: Current UK tyre regulations require a minimum of 1.6mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the tyre, around its whole circumference. Penalties include fines of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points for each illegal tyre.

Winter weather and car tyres

TyreSafe have experience and won awards in recognition of its achievements. It knows that with the wet winter weather looming, and the lack of winter tyres in the UK compared to other countries, means that existing tyre tread depth is crucial. This is probably even more important as the previous year saw unprecedented winter weather and left many vehicles stranded.

TyreSafe is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of the dangers of defective and worn tyreswww.tyresafe.org
