Information & Round-up of Tyre Safety Month

As we are coming towards the end of Tyre Safety Month I thought it would be good to do a roundup of what has been happening online and who has been providing tyre safety information.

First of all TyreSafe, one of the UK’s leading tyre safety organisations, launched Tyre Safety Month during October 2010.

This October, TyreSafe is highlighting the importance and simplicity of checking tyre tread depth. Sufficient tread depth is vital to vehicle safety. In wet weather, the tread pattern helps to remove water from the tyre’s contact patch with the road surface. As a tyre’s tread wears out it loses the ability to remove all of the water from the road surface, resulting in longer stopping distances, loss of grip and an increased risk of aquaplaning.

The issue has been around for a while but there has been a bigger push as it breaks into the mainstream and general public. This time the Highways Agency backed it for the first time. Whilst TyreSafe have been campaigning on this issue for a long time with many awards, they have been joined by other websites online.

The first of them from Bridgestone, creating a new Tyre Safety website – http://tyresafety.eu/.

Bridgestone, the world’s leading manufacturer of premium passenger tyres, announces the launch of a brand-new website designed to boost awareness of the importance of tyre safety.

Featuring renowned UK motorsport expert and TV commentator, Tony Jardine, the site contains a series of short video clips demonstrating the three main pillars of Tyre Safety: tyre pressure, tread depth and damage/irregular wear. The website is the latest component of Bridgestone’s ongoing Tyre Safety campaign, which also includes over 50 000 free Tyre Safety checks conducted throughout Europe every year.

Spreading the message of tyre safety seems to have also taken up an important issue in that of winter driving. Due to the bad weather during last winter with the snow, the issue of promoting winter tyres has become even more important.

Another website comes from Continental, raising winter tyres safety awareness – http://conti-central.co.uk/

Laura Hardy, communications manager at Continental Tyres, said: “We’re really excited to be launching the Conti-Central site with a big push for our winter driving safety message, which is vital in the approaching colder months.

“We’ll be using the site to feature regular news, updates and competitions as well as some pertinent information, statistics and tips relating to winter driving, and the effect these have on road safety over all.”

And of course here at the Tyre Blog we have tried to do what we can to help promote such issues. We have covered a number of stories relating to tyre safety awareness and written about various winter tyre issues.
